2012 to 2013So as I sit here contemplating what to write for the new year, everyone is anxiously awaiting what is going to happen in the coming year financially and politically. Will these events affect ’s future and if so, how? Let me review what has transpired for over the past twelve months and see how it relates to what we can expect over the next twelve months.

Up first is the website. This has been ADDRESSED AND UPDATED OVER THE PAST YEAR. The website has been fairly well maintained and updated on a regular basis to keep folks apprised of what is happening with and the model railroading hobby. Thanks to our webmaster, Anna K.Amendolare, who shamelessly gives herself credit for these accomplishments. So much for the website.

Successes and failures over the last year have also been a part of ’s ongoing endeavors. Unfortunately, not every venue continues to be a success as was the case with the Chocolate Train Wreck show in Hamilton and the Christmas display at Preswick Glen. However, along with less than desirable results, we also had some successes in our involvement with other shows. Of particular interest this past year was Fisher Elementary School where displayed layouts on various occasions throughout the year and ’s involvement with the Genesee ‘N Ontario group and others at a giant T-trak display in Syracuse. These activities prove the viability of both and the T-trak concept. These shows also point to the decline in the presentation of full sized N-trak layouts as they become less popular and T-trak rises in popularity, mostly because of transportation issues. The compromise between available space for scenery and the ability to transport the modules is being won by the smaller T-trak modules. N-trak advantages are longer trains and more scenery, while T-trak has the advantage of easier setup and transportation. There is certainly room for both concepts, but currently, T-trak appears to be ahead in the popularity arena. To support this claim, recently finished a mountain division of the T-trak concept and is continuing to expand with more mountain modules on the way. Additionally, is now fully engaged in HO T-trak with our newer members carrying the responsibilities for this expansion.

Other ideas for the N scale T-trak are utilizing current modules in new and innovative ways to create such fascinating layouts as the double bubble and triple bubble concepts and modules being constructed to support the one-trak concept. In the HO realm, an inside corner is in the works as well as many new double modules. Most of these ideas were displayed at ’s most recent show at the Oneida County Historical Society with both HO and N scale layouts being displayed for the public. This was ’s largest HO layout so far and was well received by the community. Supplementing the HO, the N scale T-trak layout was the longest club only layout at over two and three quarters scale miles long on the red line. Not bad for a small club!

Finally, FUNTRAK wishes to welcome our newest member, Paul Boehlert into our midst. Hopefully, FUNTRAK can contribute to Paul’s interests and he in turn can help FUNTRAK move forward in its endeavors to promote the hobby. It should also be noted that our other new member this year, Greg Brockway, has contributed significantly to the club, especially with the HO T-trak modules. Greg’s efforts have greatly enhanced ’s image as well as its abilities to attract new members by increasing the field of scales being presented to the general public. FUNTRAK really does appreciate your efforts, Greg. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to a great new year, keep on training.

Funtrak at Fonda Fair 2012

 continues to expand the size of the club layouts displayed for the public. Again this year the t-trak layout got larger and the new HO t-trak layout was included at the Fonda Fair, thanks to one of FUNTRAK’s newest members, Greg Brockway. The week-long train display draws many visitors and fascinates observers as they watch multiple trains traverse the many routes available on the numerous different scale layouts on display. The hard work of the members of the clubs involved pays off in the many smiles from the public to the people presenting the great model railroads at the fair.


From The Desk: July 2012

Inspiration and ambition. Two wonderful concepts that go hand in hand. has never had a lack of ambition when it comes to model railroading and inspiration can be found in numerous places. Fortunately for club members John Fleming, Clayt Farrall, Greg Brockway, and myself, Brian Curry was kind enough to allow them to visit his exquisite N scale home layout. This layout will provide inspiration to anyone who has even the slightest interest in model railroading. The level of detail is absolutely astounding. This is to be expected as Brian is a Master Model Railroader. His craftsmanship, skills, and ingenuity are evident everywhere you look on his railroad. No detail has been overlooked. The scenery is so
realistic you feel like you are actually a part of the scene rather than just an outside observer. With this kind of inspiration as a background, members are currently undertaking a new chapter in the club’s endeavors. With adept leadership from Greg Brockway, new HO T-trak modules are being constructed. This will enhance the club’s involvement in multiple scales and provide a new avenue for others to join in if they so desire. Pictures in the post below show some of the detail on Brian Curry’s remarkable railroad. You could spend hours viewing this railroad and still not see everything. As usual, Brian was a fabulous host and a most humble individual about his accomplishments. In recognition of some of his achievements, presented Brian with a basic T-trak module with the proviso that he bring it to the PicNik next month where will proudly incorporate it into a small T-trak layout. Everyone is anxiously awaiting this event and looking forward to seeing what Brian may do with the module.

Meanwhile, as shown in one of the pictures from the work session, yours truly is actually shown doing some real work. Lorenzo was also at the work session and took the picture. All in all, ten new HO modules were constructed during this session. On the 24th of July members will meet at Greg’s house to continue construction of the new modules and anticipate having them up and running for the PicNik next month. So much for inspiration and ambition. Now to see how the two come together in the final result of accomplishment and what the new modules actually look like! Until next time, keep training.

From The Desk: June 2012

The unofficial summer has arrived! Memorial Day weekend has come and gone and members Greg Brockway, John Fleming, and I have begun a new chapter in ’s future. The HO division has been revived in the form of T-trak HO. The first of eight planned modules were constructed over the weekend, so there are now two corners awaiting track and electrical connections. Plans down the road include finishing two more corners and then building four straight modules. This will provide a minimal layout in HO of approximately four by eight feet. Club members are eager to support this new effort and look forward to the completion of the first layout. As usual, there are some minor issues that accompany any new endeavor. The first is transportation. Although HO is not really huge, it is considerably larger than the N scale modules used in T-trak. The larger size of these modules makes them more difficult to transport, but this is a problem that will eventually have a solution. Hopefully, it will be a simple solution!

Greg has volunteered to be the HO coordinator for the T-trak division and everyone in the club has promised to help him with whatever he may need to get things up and running. If you are interested in the HO side of the model railroad effort, get in touch with Greg or any club member and information, guidance, and help will be forthcoming.

In other news, Golden Spike Day, May 10, saw setting up an interesting layout back at Fisher Elementary School. Over four hundred “visitors” got to see ’s handiwork on Friday with more visitors on Saturday when the school hosted a PTA family fair. One of ’s newest members, Tim Brien, provided a beautifully scenicked Lionel layout for the students to enjoy alongside the T-trak layout. Both of these displays were big hits for everyone from toddlers to senior citizens. This was a great learning experience for the students as well as adults as the importance of railroading was acknowledged in America’s history, both past and present. The miniature world of model railroading provides a hands on experience as well as an academic challenges for all the participants. It is a great way to learn about a myriad of skills, information, and history for both student and teacher alike. If you want to try a new approach to having fun while learning a variety of new things for yourself, your children, and your friends, try model railroading. You won’t be disappointed!

FUNTRAK Celebrates Golden Spike Day

members John Fleming and Lorenzo Franchi dressed for the occasion as provided the trains for the students at Fisher Elementary School to enjoy and celebrate Golden Spike Day. The display saw over four hundred students come to view the setup and enjoy the operation of numerous trains. Tim Brien, another of ’s members, provided a gorgeous Lionel layout in addition to the T-trak layout at the school. Everything finished up on Saturday with the PTA’s fair being conducted throughout the school and the trains remaining until the fair closed. thanks all involved!


From the Desk: March 2012

March is upon us and there is very little model railroad activity in the works. However, the future holds a lot of promise. The end of the month brings RailRun, an annual activity in the Boston area where many of the club members have had the good fortune to be participants in the past. A number of the local model railroad layouts are opened up to a select group of modelers for operating sessions over a weekend at the end of the month. This year, Brian, along with club members Lorenzo Franchi and John Fleming, as well as our Canadian neighbor David King, have been invited to attend this event. This experience tends to excite the participants and often leads to many ideas about operating personal model railroads including club layouts. This makes for much more interesting train running when there is actually a purpose for the trains other than to just go in a circle.

has attempted to incorporate this idea of operations into the T-trak displays. This has been a slow and arduous task, but progress is being made and hopefully will be more successful in the future. The RailRun experience should provide encouragement for club members to help develop more operational ideas to use in our club layouts when the opportunity arises. The idea of having a purpose has lead to the construction of specific modules that have particular industries on them to support railroad usage and encourage operations. With industry, schedules, and a purpose, it is easier to develop a plan for operations. DCC adds to the enjoyment of operations because this added feature allows trains to operate in a much more realistic fashion than having to accommodate conventional DC methods. It is more difficult to “block” a T-trak layout than to use DCC. The great advantage of T-trak is that no two setups ever have to be the same and the diversity of modules means operations will be ever changing to maintain more interest and challenge for operators.

With all of these things in mind, has managed to keep ahead of the power curve by planning ahead in the design of many of the T-trak modules, anticipating the inclusion of the modules in a layout design to accommodate operations using the features mentioned. These considerations have made ‘s layouts both interesting and fun for both operators and viewers. The annual “Valley Rail Sights” club show coming up in April should prove to more fun than ever this year if many of these operational ideas are included when setting up the T-trak layout. Next Club Meeting

has a scheduled meeting at Brian’s on March 18th. This meeting is in preparation for our upcoming annual show in April. Hopefully the weather will be a little warmer. We will be discussing the layouts, manning requirements, and necessary equipment for conducting the show. If you have any questions or suggestions, this is the time to bring them up. See you there.
